First Annual Rita Marley Foundation Public Speaking Competition

Glenmuir High School Wins 1st Annual Rita Marley Foundation Public Speaking Competition

The event was held on Thursday, Feb. 12 at UWI, Mona as part of Bob Marley’s 70th earth day celebrations. Rosemary Duncan, Manager of the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) said “It was very appropriate for us to incorporate a Public Speaking competition into this year’s celebrations. As we honor a legendary musician, artiste and songwriter who used positive messages and a remarkable voice to enlighten, elevate and emancipate humankind.”

Six high schools accepted the Rita Marley Foundation’s invitation to participate. They are Glenmuir High School, Denham Town High School, William Knibb Memorial High School, York Castle High School, Wolmers Girls High School and Haile Selassie High School. Those schools selected their most eloquent and articulate speakers. It was a very impressive competition.

The topic for the 1st round of the competition “A People Detached from It’s Motherland Can Prosper.” The 2nd round of the competition was an impromptu topic “How would you make Jamaica the Greatest & the Best Country.”

Xaundre Mohansingh, the student representative for Glenmuir High School school delivered both his presentations with superb excellence. He is a masterful speaker whose eloquence and charisma captivated the judges and audience. The packed room erupted with thunderous applause during his presentations.

Mickella Anderson of Wolmers Girls was 2nd and N’Jari Chambers of William Knibb Memorial High School, 3rd. Both were forceful and fluent.

The winners received trophies, medals, certificates and cash. The winning speech will be published in the next issue of Harambe (Rita Marley Foundation newsletter).

The judges were Dr. Kwame Boafo (former Regional Director of UNESCO); Dr Kadamawe Knife (lecturer at the University of the West Indies); Attorney Michael Hylton and Ms. Stephanie Marley (Director & daughter of Bob & Rita Marley).

The event was sponsored by Tradewinds Citrus (Tru Juice), WATA, Pepsi Cola Jamaica LTD., Tastee Jamaica, Spanish Court Hotel and Suzie’s Bakery.
