Our Essay Competition in the news!

From the Jamaica Gleaner:

Rita Marley Foundation Essay winners to be revealed July 1

The winners of the second annual Rita Marley Foundation essay competition are to be announced at an awards ceremony next month.

The ceremony will be held at the main library (multi-functional room) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, on Wednesday, July 1. Several high-school students will be honoured for their entries on the topic, ‘If you are selected to address world leaders on behalf of the youth, what would be your message and why?’ The awards ceremony is slated to commence at 10:30 a.m. and end at 12 p.m.

The entries were judged by an experienced panel, including Dr Donna Hope, director at the Institute of Caribbean Studies at the UWI; Beverley Lashley, Vernon Derby, and Rita Marley herself.

The essay competition, now in its second year, saw entries from five institutions across the island, with three being first-time entrants. Speaking with The Gleaner, Rosemary Duncan, manager at the Rita Marley Foundation, said she was pleased with this year’s entries.

“We wanted to expand and are happy we were able to accomplish that at some level with the entries from three new institutions.”

Wolmer’s Boys’ School, William Knibb High and York Castle High are the first-time participants. Essays were submitted to the foundation on June 1. The top three performing schools and the top individual writers will be awarded. The first-place essay will be published in the Rita Marley Foundation newsletter, Harambe. Finalists and their schools will receive trophies and other prizes.
