5th Annual Essay Competition

From the Jamaica Gleaner:

Budding writers from high schools across Jamaica are being invited to participate in the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) Essay Competition.

This year’s topic is “Every man thinks his burden is the heaviest because they feel the pain. Who feels it knows it. But, don’t sit by the window gazing at the moon. Get right up and move.” These are lyrics from Rita Marley’s song Who Feels It, Knows It.

The foundation’s manager, Rosemary Duncan, said: “Students are encouraged to pen riveting and interesting 1,000-word original pieces as the assigned topic allows of breadth and depth for expression and interpretation.”

A panel of four educators will assess the entries.

Schools are required to submit compositions no later than June 4. The top three placements will be announced on Friday, June 29.

In last year’s competition, Wolmer’s Girls’ High School students Tamoy Campbell, Danelle Mathews and Kuan Kera Wheatley took the three top spots. The winning essay will be published in the foundation’s quarterly newsletter, Harambe.
